Zinfandel is a dark-skinned variety identified by DNA analysis as the Croatian grape Tribidrag (Crljenak Kaštelanski) and genetically identical to southern Italy's Primitivo. It arrived in the United States in the nineteenth century and became emblematic of California winemaking, with its best-known plantings — many of them old-vine — in Lodi, Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley, Amador County, and Paso Robles.
