Wine Regions / Grape Varieties

Nocera

Italy (Sicily — Messina)

Nocera is a dark-skinned Sicilian grape grown in the northeastern corner of the island, in the province of Messina. It is a required component of Faro DOC and Mamertino di Milazzo DOC, where it is blended with Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio, and it has drawn renewed attention as those appellations have been revived.

Flavors & Aromas

Dark cherry, plum, licorice, black pepper, and dried Mediterranean herbs, with earthy and faintly saline undertones.

Winemaking & Aging

Deeply colored with notably high acidity and moderate, fine-grained tannins, giving wines that stay fresh in a warm climate and age well for 5–10 years. Vigorous but poorly disease-resistant, requiring careful canopy management. Usually blended, though varietal bottlings are increasing.
