Carménère

Chile

Carménère is a dark-skinned red wine grape that was originally cultivated in Bordeaux, France, but nearly disappeared from Europe due to phylloxera. It found a new home in Chile in the 19th century, where it thrives and has become the country's signature varietal. Today, Chile is the primary producer of Carménère wines.

Flavors & Aromas

Ripe plum, black cherry, and red pepper, with notes of green bell pepper, tobacco, and cocoa. The wines often display herbal undertones and a distinctive spicy character.

Winemaking & Aging

Carménère produces full-bodied wines with moderate to high tannins and good acidity. The grape ripens late and requires warm growing conditions to achieve optimal maturity. Wines are typically aged in oak and can develop complexity with 5-10 years of bottle age, though they are often approachable in their youth.
